NEWSLETTER
– April-september
2010
Thursday 29 April at 7 p.m. - From Red Necks to Red Wine! Victoria Stein and her husband moved to France from the State of Texas only a few months ago. Yet in this short time, they have accumulated a wealth of experiences which reflects the differences between the two cultures, have caused them trials and tribulations as well as moments of sheer joy. So tonight Victoria will share observations about the French way of life as seen through the eyes of two Southerners who are doing their best to adjust to a country where cowboy hats, beer guzzling, "hollering", pick up trucks, guns and George Bush are all passé.
Thursday, May 6 at 7 p.m. – Assemblée
Générale (ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING): This is an important
event and all members are requested to attend. Not only is this the occasion to
elect members of the Board (Conseil d'Administration), but also to let
us know your thoughts about how the Association is run, and what we can do to
best meet your needs. Only members in good standing – who have paid their dues
– can attend. Our General Meeting will be followed by our customary Pot Luck dinner. Like last month,
we will ask all our members to help with the clean up at the end of our feast
Saturday,
May 8 – Today the library is open from 2 to 5 p.m.!
Thursday, May 13 at 7
p.m. – Bowling night! Tonight,
we’re not meeting at 38 allée d’Orléans but at the Bowling place in Mériadeck (Terrasse Général Koenig
33 000 Bordeaux: Tel: 05 57 81 43 77, http://www.axelvega.fr/Bowling/Informations-pratiques
) Kathryn and Helène will be
waiting for you out there to throw the ball with you! And people who are hungry
for more fun after the game(s) will be able to have a bite at a nearby
pizzeria.
Thursday, May 20 at 7 p.m. – Movie night: The Remains of the Day. Last
month we discussed Ishiguro’s great novel and tonight we will discover how it
was adapted for the screen by the American director James Ivory and his
screenwriter, Ruth Prawer Jhabwala. The
Remains of the Day features the great Anthony Hopkins and Emma Thomson. The
movie will be shown in English with French subtitles.
Thursday, May 27 at 7 p.m. – Tonight we are repeating the Great
Bordeaux-USA Pub Crawl. We will meet at 7 p.m. at the
Association and proceed from there to two or three Irish and English pubs. The purpose of the crawl is to have a good
time, not to drink too much. Indeed, it is entirely possible to order a soft
drink, or drink nothing at all. The crawl will end with dinner at the last pub or
in a restaurant at about 8:30 p.m.
Ce soir, c’est la soirée
pub!
Thursday, June 3 at 7 p.m. – Tonight, our customary POTLUCK will have an Indian theme!
Before the start of our potluck, Chayal Patel, a British lady with
Indian roots, will say a few words about Indian cuisine and you will be able to
ask her questions about her culture. Like Chayal, feel free to bring some
Indian food and beverages to the potluck (Tikka Massala Chicken, Lassis, etc.).
Remember that we have a microwave in our luxurious kitchen, so you can reheat
your dish in there. Around 9 o’clock we will ask all the remaining members to
help clean and tidy. This should not prevent you from staying a bit longer
after that to chat with your buddies.
Thursday, June 10
at 7 p.m. – Singalong by Kathryn! Tonight Kathryn Larcher, the Joan Baez of the association, is
going to make us sing (the neighbors have already been warned). She will
distribute the lyrics (or show them on our screen) of some of our favourite
songs and we’ll have to....singalong!
Venez chanter avec
Kathryn ce soir!
Saturday, June 12: Today the
library is open from 2 to 5 p.m. for the last time of the season!
Thursday, June 17 at 7 p.m. – Movie: J’irai dormir à Hollywood! Tonight we are going to watch a funny documentary about a quintessential Frenchman, Antoine de Maximy, who travels from New York to Los Angeles. On his way, he asks quite a few Americans that he has just met if he can spend the night at their place... (The members travelling to New York in September will study his technique very closely cause they will try the same trick).
Thursday, June 24 at 7 p.m. – My life, work, joys and disappointments in the Deep South! Sandrine Bogreau, a former member of Bordeaux-USA, moved to Louisiana three years ago. She now lives in Houma and has taught French in several nearby public schools. Tonight she will talk about the various aspects of her life in the land of the alligators.
Thursday, July 1st
at 6:45 p.m. – Potluck in the outdoors!
Come and join us for the first potluck of the summer! Tonight we’re going
to try out an idea suggested by Aude Mathieu in October: if the evening is as
sunny as it should be, we are going to have our potluck outside, near the
Garonne. So let’s all meet at Bx-USA at 6h45 and we’ll move to the picnick area
(only a few meters away) around 7.
Sunday, July 4: INDEPENDENCE DAY PICNIC at Bordeaux Bastide. Please see the attached form. Two
requests:
1) The earlier you reserve, the easier it is to plan things. So please send your checks in sooner rather than later!
2) If you are free to help prepare a dish or set up, please let us know!
Please note Dirk's cell phone number just in case: 06 61 71 77 09.
Thursday, August 5 at 7 p.m. – Hey
you ladies and gents who are not away on holidays, come and share a potluck with your fellow Bordeaux-USA
members!
